Historic Sites

 

Manassa, Colorado.  Manassa was established as a result of a program inaugurated by Brigham Young to create settlements outside of Utah.  Latter-Day Saints began settling Manassa about 1879.  Samuel Jackson and his family moved from Nephi, Utah to Manassa in 1887-1888.  For more information read The Mormons: 100 Years in the San Luis Valley of Colorado, complied and edited by Carleton Q. Nephi, Utah.  Soon after arriving in in the Salt Lake Valley with the Martin Handcart Company on November 30, 1856, the Jackson family was sent to Nephi, Juab County, Utah where they made their home.
 
Riverton, Utah.  Timothy Gilbert and his family settled in Riverton about 1859.  He was one of the first four permanent settlers.
